Most people are followers. They will follow a person that gets their attention more than others. After a while they develop an allegiance to that person. Soon, they will believe whatever that person teaches. If there is a central theme that one believes, it is much better and safer to have come to that conclusion from several sources. It is better to have read widely; to have studied widely, and then to "search the scriptures to see whether these things are so" (Acts 17: 11).
Well now, they whose

And Azazel (an angel) taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose [ ] There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. Many Christians do not know how to handle extra-biblical literature, especially Jewish literature, written during the times of the Bible. Ive often wondered if maybe this isnt because they are separated into chapter and verse and make people feel like they are reading the Bible, and they dont want to be confused. This is understandable, but unfortunate. There are three choices for understanding the material in these books. The first is to ignore them and pretend that they dont exist. Sadly, this is a popular response of many Christians , but it isnt particularly helpful or honest. Ancient peoples from all over the world speak to the issue of giants and heavenly beings. The second is to deny that they say anything true; extrabiblical becomes fabrication and lies. A softer position is to treat most or everything in them not quoted in the Bible as fable and error. This may originate in a strange kind of fundamentalist mistake having its roots in a misunderstanding of what makes Scripture Scripture. The books in the canon that make up our Bibles are not Scripture because they are true and everything else is false. For example, Einstein could write the formula: E = MC 2. The formula is true, but it is not Scripture. I could give you my wifes recipe for the best chilli in the world, which would be a true recipe, but not Scripture. I could have you read a biography of George Washington, which is true history, but not Scripture.
While all Scripture is true, is it not the case that everything that is not Scripture is false. It should be obvious as to why the Einstein formula, the recipe for chilli, or the Washington biography should not be considered Holy Wit. A person can get into some tricky spots when they take this approach that everything said in extrabiblical literature is fabrication. For example, as I said above, Jude quotes the book of Enoch verbatim (see Jude 14 and 1 Enoch 1:9) as being the very words of Enoch, a prophecy that he holds to be quite true. How then do we respond? Ive heard more than one person say something like this, Yes, this particular verse of Enoch is true, but none of the rest of it is . This incredible unfalsifiable declaration expects us to shut down all critical thinking, to accept that one verse in Enoch is true because Jude says that it is, and then dump the rest of the book that he quotes and alludes to more than once, because someone outside of the Bible tells you too. This is called fideism, the belief that you believe for no good reason. Fideism is opposed to everything taught in the Bible, including the idea of faith. Faith rests on truth, not absurdity. Enoch is not Scripture for several different reasons . This does not mean, of course, that it relates nothing true about history, or more absurdly, that it gives us only one true verse and Jude happened to discover it. While appealing to Enochs view of the events of Genesis 6: 1-4 cannot, of itself , give us certainty that the view is correct , we can be certain from the material that we presently have available to us that everyone in Judes day has the same view of the Genesis 6 story that 1 Enoch does. Considering that Jude quotes and alludes positively to 1 Enoch many times (see chart below), it is a good bet that he has the same view as everyone else. Furthermore , neither Jude nor 2 Peter ever says that 1 Enoch is false history. Nor do they hint at it. This is an argument from silence. Rather, Jude says, The angels who did not stay within their own position
of authority , but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day (Jude 1:6). 2 Peter is similar. Both clearly have the Enochian tradition of Genesis 6 in view in these verses, as at least Jude does do throughout his little epistle. This gives us the third option for understanding this kind of literature. We can use these extant books and texts wisely and discerningly, without being afraid that we are therefore asking for them to be included in the canon. Christians cite John Calvin and John Wesley, Max Lucado and Chuck Swindoll, and no one ever claims that by quoting them or reading them that they are magically turning them into Scripture. The thought never even crosses our minds. The same grace should be extended to these books as well, especially knowing that they were used by the NT and held up as important by the early church. This kind of an attitude is all the more important for those books written prior to the NT by
people in the OT community of God that very well could have trusting in the coming Messiah. The fact is, these books were the popular literature of the day and biblical authors read them just as we would read popular commentaries or other Christian writings in our own day. This doesnt make them true or false. It does make them important. If these books tell us about the sons of God or giants, we should use wisdom, we should compare them with the biblical data, we should inspect them for exaggeration, but we should also realize that this was the view of that day and that the NT writers have the same worldview, as I have repeatedly demonstrated throughout the book.
